RAID migration from software B140i controller to hardware P822.
Hi,
I have a trusty HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9 server running two RAID-1 arrays with the build in software HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller.
I'd like to migrate those RAID-1 arrays from software based B140i to HPE Smart Array P822 Controller for performance reasons.
Now, can I just mount the controller in a PCIe slot and connect the drives and they RAID arrays will be recognized and connected or should I create backup and create new arrays with the P822 and manually migrate the data?
Any help appreciated, thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Blaze

Re: RAID migration from software B140i controller to hardware P822.
Hi,
At some point of time with new hard drives, it will ask to format the disks with desired RAID, so its better to take a backup, then create a new HW RAID.
NOTE: It’s important to keep data backup before performing this activity.
Data integrity is customer responsibility. HPE recommends having data backup frequently and before performing any activity so that it can be restored during disaster recovery.
Thank You!

Betreff: RAID migration from software B140i controller to hardware P822.
Hi Blaze,
I never did it, but the QuickSpeck says:
Data migration from B-series to P-series controllers
...full compatibility with Smart Array disk format ...
Data Compatibility among all models of Smart Array controllers allows simple and easy upgrades any time needs for higher performance, capacity, and availability increase. Even successive generations of Smart Array controllers understand the data format of other Smart Array Controllers.
And agree, Backup is always a good idea.

So in theory plugging in the P822 into PCIe and plugging in the drives should "just work".
Any configuration / pre-configuration work needed? And if so, would it be from the system BIOS?

Well, that's how I would interpret it.
