Raid Status

Hi to all, I need an help to correctly understand the status of a Raid 1 on a server of new customer.  (ProLiant DL380 Gen9 with Smart Array P440ar)
When I have made the first access on this server I had the Raid 1 in the photo (link below) with disk 1 (Port 2l Bay 5) in the same status (pre-fault) and the disk 2 (Port 2l Bay6) in faulty state. I proceed substituting the disk 2 with new one and I have seen the Raid in rebuilding (I have no much experience with hp server, but in the past the rebuild always starts automatically). After a while I come back to check the raid status and I found the current state. Now I dont understand:
1) if the system is waiting a command to start the rebuild of Raid after the substitution of disk 2 (if yes I dont found the way to send the rebuild command)
2) the system have completed the rebuild od the Raid 1 after the substitution on disk 2 ad now are ready to rebuild the raid after the replace also the disk 1 with new one.
I would repair the raid online without turn off the server.
Your help will be very appreciate

Re: Raid Status

Dear donCaster

for your kind information, RAID 1 also known as disk mirroring, is a data storage configuration that duplicates data across multiple hard drives. This creates a redundant copy, so if one drive fails, the other drive can take over without any data loss. This provides high availability and data protection, making it suitable for applications where data integrity is critical. Because data is duplicated, RAID 1 requires twice the storage capacity of a single disk. RAID 1 does not enhance write performance, as all writes need to be mirrored. So, if you replaced any of RAID volume disk. It will automatically start rebuilding process. After completion of rebuilding process, virtual disk will showing as healthy. No need to replace another one. Occasionally, we need to start the rebuilding process manually, while storage sub system is in very critical state, and unable start the process automatically or there is not configured with automatic rebuild features enabled.

Importance of Monitoring:

During the rebuild process, the system is still protected, but it is vulnerable to another drive failure. It's crucial to monitor the rebuild progress and ensure it completes successfully.

Hope, I could provide you with clear and helpful instructions. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help! Have a great day!!

Rif.: Raid Status

thank you for your reply, but I know what is a Raid1 and yes, usually Hp controller starts the rebuild automatically. I need to understand the current status of disk array. I'm found some articles and I think that, after the substitution of faulty disk, the raid rebuilding was not completed because disk 1 also is in an error status. I tried to made a fully backup before try to turn off the server, check the disk connection and reboot the system, but the backup job fails with "unrecoverable hardware error". I hope to resolve with a reboot, but I'm not so confident

Rif.: Raid Status

Dear donCaster

Please download HPE Smart Storage Administrator (HPE SSA) application and install it on your server to check/modify the status of your Virtual disk and physical disk. Also Please share the snapshots to check status.

As per your given snap shot it is showing that slot5  SSD HDD have PFA error count. it need to be replace. Please arrange to replace the disk with same part no. Also it is observed that slot 5 SSD is Samsung SSD 870 EVO HDD which is not certified SSD. you can see slot 6 SSD showing as HP model disk. The most common place to find the HPE HDD part number is on the sticker located on the front of the drive tray. For newer HPE ProLiant servers (Gen8 and later), the sticker may only show the first six digits of the spare part number. You can find this information on HPE PartSurfer by searching with the product part no. or you can check your server QuickSpec for HPE dl 380 Gen9 Server, page no -26 for supported SSD part.

Re: Raid Status

Hi

Enter the Intelligent Provisioning interface and then select Smart Storage Administrator. If there's a problem, the system won't rebuild.
