reconstruction of logical drive

I have six 36gb disk in the shared storage of my CL380 server in a raid 5 configuration. One of the disks went bad and was replaced. I ran the 3500 configuration utility and added the new drive back in the logical drive (the logical drive is made up of all six drives totaling 160gb.) The reconstruction process began at 4pm and is only 29% complete at 9:30am the next morning. The drive is unaccessible too! Please advise on what is wrong.

Re: reconstruction of logical drive

If one of your drives in your RAID 5 array goes bad, then just replace the drive and the RAID set will automatically rebuild. The logical drives will remain online the whole time. You do not need to "add the new drive back in the logical drive". This is not possible or necessary for the situation you have described. It sounds like you are creating a new RAID set as opposed to rebuilding a degraded RAID set.

Re: reconstruction of logical drive

I stand corrected....we were thinking Smart Array Cluster.

For the CR3500 controller, if a drive goes bad in a RAID 5, when you replace the drive, you must go into the CR3500 config utility to add the new drive. Then you can rebuild the degraded RAID set.

The LUN should not be inaccessible during this rebuild time. Nor should it take this long to rebuild (especially if the LUN is inaccessible).

Sorry for any confusion and please let us know if this works for you.
