Removing a physical drive from an array due to a faulty slot

Hi All,

i've got a Proliant DL380 that seems to have a faulty hot plug slot. ID2 fails regularly and I've tried other drives in it (both old and new) but same happens.

What I want to do is use slot ID3 instead of ID2 but it seems that if i use the array config tool in windows and try to remove ID2 from the array, I'll lose my logical drives (system drive and data!).

Does anyone know how i can achieve this without wiping and starting again?

You probably need to reconfigure the array. That would probably require you to boot off the array configuration cd and change the configuration. It should not require you to wipe anything.

Hi Simon,

AFAIK, if you relocate a member of your fully configured array to any other slot, and then power on the server, the array controller should automatically detect the new place of relocated member, and ask for confirmation from you. in this case, no data or array config will be lost.but I'm not sure is this mechanism works with DL380 or not.

otherwise, if you remove only one member from any fault tolerant array ( array other than RAID 0), no data will be lost. then you can reconfigure your array with newly relocated HDD.

Thanks for the input guys. Seems one of my colleagues had a 'play' with it...

inserted new disk in spare stot
it becamse part of array
removed it and because of existing fault, we've now got data loss.

Format here we go. Sorry I couldn't try your suggestions...
