Reused of Server Disk and RAM
Hi,
Sorry Im new to HP Server, can I ask for help with purchasing new servers.
Since DL20 Gen9 is not supported on ESXi version 7, we are planning to upgrade to Gen 10 or 11.
The question is due to budget constraints, can we reused the DL20 Gen9 Disk and RAM?
Is there any risk or problems to be encountered?
Do you know any links or knowledge based that I couls used as reference.
Thanks

Re: Reused of Server Disk and RAM
Hello,
In my opinion, you can reuse the old parts but those old part numbers must be listed under the supported spare parts list of the server that you are going to buy. You can use the HPE Support Center website at https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home to get the related articles/documents.

Re: Reused of Server Disk and RAM
Thank you, I appreciate your response but I could not find any articles that justify that its okay to reused the said parts.
I need also to know what are the corresponding risk of doing this approach.

Re: Reused of Server Disk and RAM
For example, https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04506831&sfdcIFrameOrigin=null can be used to identify which memory modules are approved on your system
Next you need to find the same document for Gen10 and cross-check if the number of the module is listed.
About the disks, usually if it's a rotational disk (SAS/SATA) and your controller supports SAS disks - it will work, but keep in mind that non-HPE parts could cause the system fans go crazy.
About the NVMEs and SSDs is much more complicated.

Re: Reused of Server Disk and RAM
Hello,
Please do refer to the quickspecs of the Gen9 and Gen10 servers to check if the drives can be reused.
However we also need to consider the controller installed and if it supports the drives.
Please do refer the quickspecs of the server which will give detailed information and understanding of the drives that are supported on the server.
DL20 Gen9: https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getdocument.aspx?docname=c04834947
DL20 Gen10: https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getdocument.aspx?docname=a00053820enw
Also, the memory module might not be reused. Please do refer the memory matrix for the Gen9 and Gen10 servers.
You can confirm that the memory cannot be reused if the part number of the Gen9 memory module does not match with the Gen10 memory matrix.
Gen9: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04506831
Gen10: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-a00036896en_us
Thanks.

Re: Reused of Server Disk and RAM
I checked the quick specs for gen10 and I don't see that SSD.Yet, if the Controller can also be transferred - then you should just check the controller compatibility.
It's easier of you contact sales team to assist you.

I have use DL20 G9 and G10
same DDR4 ECC memory, SAS disk , you could reuse them in G10
