SCSI-3 HD installed on a SCSI-2 controller

With prior experience, installing the SCSI-3 HD on a SCSI-2 controller caused the server to crash.

Is it possible to install SCSI-3 HD on a SCSI-2 controller? If so, what procedures need to be followed to have this work?

We do have a 5300 controller for the SCSI-3 HD's, but we need the additional space now.

We are currently configured with 8 SCSI-2 18GB HD. We would be adding the 2 SCSI-3 36GB HD to this configuration temporarily, unitl we have time to properly configure the server.

Re: SCSI-3 HD installed on a SCSI-2 controller

The specifications for the 5300 list the following drives as supported: Ultra3, Ultra2 and Wide-Ultra (SCSI-3). If you mean Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 (drive speeds) in your questions, the answer is yes, the 5300 would be able to run these drives just fine, but mixing the drives on the same bus would cause the bus to run at the speed of the slower drives, ie U2. U2 and U3 both use the scsi - 3 protocol. If you want to put a scsi -2 drive on the 5300, it will not work.
