SCSI Hard Drives
Hello all, I just picked up a Proliant 5500 Server without hard drives. I ordered Ultra Wide 3 drives with trays, and they don't fit. All research shows both Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 drives, with different types of trays. Can anyone shed some light on which type of drive this server requires? The backplane appears to be a standard SCSI interface, and the slot is about 1 inch high, this server has space for 12 drives, can anyone assist with which type of drive I need? Thanks in advance.

Re: SCSI Hard Drives
Well sure, I don't know if all the Spec info helped at all. From our old compatitbility list, http://e4services.net/comhotplugdr.html ,indications are that the 5500 was, as you found out, one of the models that was produced during the transitional years between the Wide Ultra and Ultra2 backplanes, and the termination by the industry of producing the 1.5" form factor hard drives and therefore the new Universal Hot-Plug tray.
SO... my assumption, since you have U3 drives, is that you have the Universal Trays there and you have the Wide Ultra backplane that accepts the older style tray (actually has a card-edge connector and not the SCA 8- pin connector)
THERFORE, you can either replace the drive cage from the 328696-001/298019-001 with the Universal one 387087-001/144575-001 ($136.59) OR change out the trays the drive are mounted in ($50 each?)
