Server down....Help me...

I have a Proilant DL380 server but it won't start.

What might have caused this problem is that in the office we tried to turn it on without the cover on, and never since we managed to make it work.

When we turn it on, power gets to it, Motherboard checks for devices (P.O.S.T) and the it cancelles boot sequence. We get no video signal what so ever, we see the HDD working and inmediatly it turns the red-crossed LED and it shuts down. We think the Motherboard might be blocking the entire system.

What can we do?

Which DL380 do you have? (G1, G2, G3, G4?). Can you identify any red LEDs on the system board itself?

Thank you for such a fast reply.

We have a Compaq Proilant DL380 server, it's neither G1, G2, G3 or G4.

I can see two LEDs, a green one on the Motherboard and a red one on the PCI Expansion Card (it reads Power Auxiliar right next to it)

Re: Server down....Help me...

Note: If there is no "G" designation then you have the G1 or first generation DL380.

I assume you are referring to the PCI Riser card when you say the PCI expansion card. This PCI Riser card/cage is the card with the PCI slots on it. Here are the possible issues if the PCI Riser card has a red LED:

1. Riser Board is not fully seated or is defective. Try removing & reseating this board.
2. AC Power Cord not fully seated into Power Supply or defective Power Supply. Reconnect power from power supply to motherboard.

If none of this works the first step would be to replace the power supply. The replacement part # is 159125-001. For pricing & to place orders online use this URL for HP Parts Direct:

Re: Server down....Help me...

What we have is indeed a PCI Riser. WE tried taking it off, cleaning it and the placing it again in its place, and, when powered up, it turns the PCI Riser LED on (yellow/orange colour). When we tried removing it and then power up, the red LED rigt next to the PCI Riser slot turned on.

We've checked the power supply and the power cords, they work OK. WE have 2 Power Supply units, one set as Main and the other set as optional. The optional does not work, but the main unit works OK.

When we power up the server we get the POwer LED ON(green color) and the Link LED ON (flashing green light), after that the HDDs LED turn ON aswell, just to turn on an orange LED that's just like the one next to it, only it has cross over it, like a forbiden sign or something of the sort.

Someone one told us that this happens because we turned the server on without replacing the cover on it, and that this causes the server to block itself due to security reasons. Is this possible? If so, can you give us a tip on how to unblock it?

Note: The display ramains always OFF and we've cchecked it on another PC, it worked OK.

Thank you very much

Re: Server down....Help me...

You may have a bad Riser board. What is the history on this server? The cover is suppose to be off when running the server, but it is ok to run it for short periods without the cover. This should not "lock" the system.
The PCI Riser board is required to run the server.
