Smart Array change causes BSOD

I have had to replace a Smart 2SL array controller with a Smart 221 Controller. Now on boot I get a BSOD Stop 7B Inaccessible Boot Device message.
Is there any simple way of swapping an array controller to another model without crashing the system.

Did you update the drivers first? If the existing driver is too old, it will not be able to handle the 221 controller and therefore...
