Hello,
My company has two identical servers HP Proliant Gen 9 (let's call them server A and B)
On one of the server (server A), i had the following error :
"312- HPE Smart Sorage Battery 1 Faillure - Communication with the battery failed. Its ouput may not be enabled. Action : verufy battery is property installed. (...)"
"Embedded RAID 1: Smart Array P440AR Controller (...)
1797-Slot 0 Drive Array - Write Back Cache Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module"
I checked the forum indicated that you need to upgrade Firmware of the Smart Array P440AR and change the battery.
The battery of server A was indeed out of service ( less that 1 V) . I took the battery ot server B which seemed ok ( measure with multimeter approximately 8V) and upgraded the Smart Array P440AR Controller Firmware from 4.52 to the latest 7.20.
Using Smart Sotrage Administrator, i also re-enable the cache, but the cache controlller is still permanently disabled.
Do i need to buy latest battery? Is the old version battery, alhtough with sufficient charge, may not help to re-enable the cache? I have battery ref 871264-001.
Does this cache controller problem may explain the big number of hard disk that seemed to be out of service (always restoring) when we rebooted the server (in total, we had 5 out of 10 disks out of order for these 2 servers in the last year). That's a lot!

SolutionHello,
The cache is a memory that stores data to be flushed from the controller to the hard drives. A battery is present to power the cache so that data is not lost on power failure. If the error states that the array controller's cache module battery failed, then the battery needs replacement. if the error states that the cache is permanently failed, then the cache module needs to be replaced.
