Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
Hello,
We've recently stumbled upon an issue with some of the systems migrated from another customer. We've noticed that some of the OS and DATA RAIDs have been created as RAID 0 and while trying to to a RAID Level migration we are only prompted with RAID 0 option.
Hardware : ProLiant DL360 Gen9
RAID Controller : Smart Array P440ar
Cache Batter : HPE 727258-B21 96W Smart Storage Battery
Arrays config:
Array A -> Logical Disk for OS -> RAID 0 from 2x300GB
Array B -> Logical Disk for Data -> RAID 0 from 3x600GB
We've already explained the benefits and the need to urgently enabled Fault tolerante and transform the RAID 0 to RAID 1, with the downside that we will lose half of the assigned space.
In SSA in both Online and Offline mode we only get RAID 0 as an option
When tried to do it from CLI using : ctrl slot=0 logicaldrive 1 modify raid=1 we get the error "Error: "raid=1" is not a valid option for Smart Array P440ar in Slot 0 (embedded), Available options are 0 (current value) (default value)"
Did anyone faced this issue so far and if yes, was anyone able to solve it somehow ?
Am i doing something wrong ?

Re: Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
Hi,
in this case, a Migraton will shrink the Volume von 600GB to 300GB.
Usually, this can not be done without Data loss and the SR Manual only talks about "array capacity expansion", not shrinking.
So, I believe you have to go the hard way, delete the Array and recreate it.
If there is already Data, you will need to Backup & Restore.

Re: Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
That's what i was afraid off.
The trade of reducing the disk size ain't necessary a problem here, but how avoid data loss. Numbnuts that thought creating a RAID 0 for OS logical drive, didn't assesed the possible future issues.
While i can accept this as a defeat there's one other particular case that doesn't make sense.
I just found another server that has a RAID 0 from a 600GB Drive, adding a 2nd drive to the Array should make it possible to Migrate to a different RAID level, though i face the same issue.
This are the extra disks
The RAID 0 ld
The Migrate RAID options
I do have a new option to Move Logica Drive , but that would only migrate the LD from one array to another.
The problem is that it won't let me create a RAID1, it forces me to chose only 1 disk and it will create a RAID 0 also out of it.
I also tried creating a RAID 1 , but then the Move Logical Drive option dissapears, so i guess it is only available if unassigned drives exists.
Funny thing is that i can go from RAID1 to RAID 0

Re: Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
I agree.
Should look like this:
You have an unused Disk with the same Type (SAS) and Size.
Usage of Smart Cache may prevent.
Battery Cache is fine?
Sorry, I don't know, I will try to Update the Array Firmware and SSA GUI next.

Re: Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
I would assume that's from a different type of RAID Controller ?
HP Smart cahce is disabled (no lic)
Battery Cache is fully charged and its almost full 1.8GB out of 2
Firmware is at latest version

Re: Smart ArrayP440ar - RAID Level Migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1
Checked in one of the server and tried testing by creating Raid 0 with two drives and found only option to migrate to Raid 0.
However when created Raid 1 with 2 drives and then we get the option to migrate back to Raid 0. Same with Raid 5 and gives option to migrate to Raid 0. So it seems from Raid 0 we cannot migrate to another Raid.
