SSD firmware updating

I have an HP 120GB SSD which I am trying to use to install Windows Server R2 on a custom built machine. There was a firmware update for this drive in 2010 to fix a disk read error message but an HP smart array is required for the update. Is there any way to get the firmware on the SSD without the array. I have both an LSI 8308ELP and an ARECA ARC-1261ML cards - is there a way to do it with those.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: SSD firmware updating

Hi,

I am not sure what SSD model you have but i am guessing one of the below:

HP 120GB 3G SATA SFF (2.5-inch) Midline Solid State Drive 572073-B21
HP 120GB 3G SATA SFF (2.5-inch) Non-hot plug Midline Solid State Drive 572077-B21

Click here and refer to installation instructions.

According to the instructions this disk drive component requires :

  • HP Smart Array P212 firmware version 1.06 or later
  • HP Smart Array P410/P410i/P411 firmware version 1.06 or later
  • HP Smart Array P712m with firmware version 1.64 or later

So I am guessing if the HP SSD works fine on your LSI 8308ELP and an ARECA ARC-1261ML cards then firmware update should work fine.

I have not tested this myself but hope it works when done using Firmware Maintenance DVD on a USB key and booting from the USB Key.

Good Luck!
