Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hopefully this helps for those out there with the problem of the NC373i disappearing after upgrading the PSP: I upgraded PSP from 7.6 to 7.9 and the embedded NICs disappeared. I am running terminal server for Server 2003.

I had the "HP N373i Virtual Bus Device" Driver yellow flag in Device Manager and the NICs were nowhere to be found. I tried reinstalling the drivers with cp008238.exe but it kept failing.

The fix I found was do a rollback of the Virtual Bus driver (in Device Manager) and it immediately reinstalled and enabled the NICs. I then upgraded the drivers again with cp008238 and it worked.

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

We've got 3 customers with ML350 G5 based hardware. All three have experienced a hang. Totally unresponsive system that must be reset via iLO. ASR does not kick in at all.

Running SBS 2003 or Server 2003 R2 SP2 I believe. Latest firmware/psp/windows patches.

No bluescreens or other wierdness. Hang occurs randomly on 2 sites (once on one in the last week, twice on the other) and predominantly during backup (BE11d) every 2-7 days on the 3rd site. The 3rd site has had these issues for 2 months now.

Would I be right in thinking the TOE issues mentioned earlier could be the culprit???? I'm checking now to confirm if this is enabled at all 3 sites.....

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Confirming Stability with PSP 7.70A which was BSOD(ing) like crazy through last week...

Downgraded PSP 7.91 to 7.7, BSOD(s) continued (as usual !)

HP Network Config was not opening giving me an error of network driver being below version 8.80.00

Problem finally found in the registry, for some reason cpqteam.sys and cpqteam.exe were being pointed to C:\Program Files\HP\NCS\ instead of C:\Windows\system32\

I'm not sure where the incorrect registry reference came from, probably one of the PSP installations I was trying to fix my problems with... PSP 7.8 & 7.9 & 7.91

Solution:

1.Search registry for cpqteam*
2.If u find anything pointing to C:\Program Files\HP\NCS\ change to C:\Windows\system32\
3.Delete OR Rename C:\Program Files\HP\NCS\
4.Voila !

BSOD(s) stopped instantly, Stress tested the hell out of the DL380 G3 server for over 3 hours (Stable), and HP network config program opens normally now...

Fiddled with ALL the network settings and the system stayed in a stable state! Have'nt tried teaming though as we dont have a need for it...

Conclusion:

Stay away from CPQTEAM.sys / CPQTEAM.exe version 8.80.00

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hi Everyone.

Could any of the ML350 G5 server admins (maybe Daryl Petersen or Jason Riebe) please comment on the hang issues that they have experienced on these models and if anybody has maybe found a solution for these intermediate hangs (not BSOD as experienced by other admins).

We have 2 brand new ML350 G5 servers that both display the same behavior. Servers just hang intermittently. Logging in just render a grey screen at with absolutely no response. OS drive raid set's lights remain on. I can still ping the server but that's it.

Server Specs:
Server 1:
ML350 G5.
2x 5300 Dual Core Xeon Processors.
8x 146GB drives (2 x Raid 1 and 4x Raid 1 + 0).
E200i Raid onboard controller.
Installed using Smartstart 7.9.0 and Firmware CD 7.9.0.

Server 2:
ML350 G5.
2x 5320 Quad Core Xeon Processors.
8x 146GB drives (2 x Raid 1 and 4x Raid 1 + 0).
E200i Raid onboard controller.
Installed using Smartstart 7.9.1 and Firmware CD 7.9.1.

Tried rolling the PSP on Server 2 back to version 7.7 and disabled the TOE setting in the Registry but still no luck. Server hung again this morning.

I'm really getting desperate here since these are live production servers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Pieter Smith

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hi @all
We had the same Problems with these Servers, but finally (hope so) they run smoothly.
No hangs since Friday (otherwise nearly each day)

Here is what we did (official HP Technical response) :

1. Apply the Latest BIOS and firmware updates to the server by using latest firmware maintenance CD 7.91 release very recently
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/28059.html

2. Update the server PSP to latest 7.91 which is release very recently from the below URL
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/28003.html

3. Disable the TCP chimney and RSS feature of the Windows 2003 server using the following MS article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594/en-us

4. Open the NCU and Network interface properties > Advance Settings > Uncheck Enable for TCP offload Engine
5. Open the NCU and Network interface properties > Advance Settings > Uncheck Enable for Receive Side Scaling

Follow the step 4 and 5 for both the integrated Network adapters

6. Reboot the system so that the registry changes will take effect

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Thanks Zellweger.

One of the 2 servers hung again just before lunch time so I decided to quickly make the changes you suggested. Fingers crossed. Will keep you posted.

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Nope. One of the ML350 G5's (Quad core one) just hung again. Setup exactly as mentioned above but still hung after 24 hours and 38 minutes of uptime.

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hello Pieter,

I've done the same and finally got my server stable (atleast for the last 3 days),its a DL380 G3 that was driving me nuts !

What i've added to that is disabled ASR and totally disabled the builtin NICs from BIOS and attached a 3com PCI NIC instead...

Try disabling ASR first and see what happens

Product Support Pack.. it contains all the driver updates applicable to your server.

If you need more help, you should probably start another thread- this one has already involved enough different topics.

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hi Chris.

We've tried just about every Software/BIOS setup change in this thread with no luck. We eventually sourced a loan P600 Raid controller (512MB Cache) from our local HP suppliers (just about everything else in the server has been replaced by HP under warranty). After installing this and moving all our Raid volumes across to the new controller things are looking up.

Our Quad Core ML350 G5 has been stable for 9 days and 3 hours now.

Wish i could give you an actual solution for the problem but so far this is what we've come up with.

BTW, The P400 Raid Controller doesn't seem to be compatible with the ML350 G5 (Error message on POST and no drives visible). Also, it looks like it is impossible to disable the onboard E200 controller in the BIOS so we are currently running the E200 and the P600 side by side with no drives connected to the E200.

Hope this helps even if its just an interim solution.

Regards,
Pieter

Re: STOP error after PSP 7.8

Hi Pieter

Thanks for that, It sounds like you have been through the mill.

I ended up doing the following 3 things

1. Updated the e200i smart array controller Firmware to v 1.66.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=nz&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121586&prodNameId=3279711&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-12ffe40b05604ee38c6a3c3475

2. Updated the win server 2003 driver for the e200i to v 6.8.0.32

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=nz&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121586&prodNameId=3279711&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-e8be8b8ea03540ee9efb75ce46

3. A storport update from MS
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932755

and so far so good we are 5 days without a lockup (they were happening nearly every day under high disk load).

Cheers
Chris
