What interface to use to connect HP DL380 gen9 to HP MSA 1040
Hi,
My customer is asking for server with data storage array from me. and based on his requirements i suggested him following server:
HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 E5-2670v3 2.3GHz 12-core 2P 64GB-R P440ar 8SFF 2x10Gb 2x800W PS Server/S-Buy
784655-S01
its coming with additional HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 556FLR-SFP+ Adapter .
As customer wanted high capacity data storage i offered him following:
HP MSA 1040 2-port 10G iSCSI Dual Controller LFF Storage Link on HP.com.
I thought to connect them through SPF+ port on DL380 's 556FLR adapter, BUT on specification page of HP MSA 1040 chosen it's showing only SFP port for 10G iSCSI connection. Despite this in Service and options page of MSA 1040 they are showing SFP+ to SFP+ compatible cables.
THE QUESTION IS: how to connect above given HP DL380 and HP MSA 1040 using 10G connection, what kind of cables or transceivers would be required.
I just could not figure out is 10Gb SFP+ and 10Gb iSCSI are compatible or same?
Or it would be better(cheaper) to connect server and data storage using different (but high speed also, at least 8G) interface?
Would appreciate any help.

Re: What interface to use to connect HP DL380 gen9 to HP MSA 1040
Normally iSCSI is used when multiple systems are going to be using the strorage resource. When there is only one server involved you would be better advised in using a direct attach storage solution.
If you look at page 33/34 of the DL380 Gen9 quickspecs you will see the D6000 and a D2600 direct attach storage options

Re: What interface to use to connect HP DL380 gen9 to HP MSA 1040
Hello @Limo
Jimmy Vance gave excellent information, I am please he was able to give you a solution. There are several HP D6000 options available, which are available directly through HP. The HP D2600 w/12 4TB 6G SAS 7.2K LFF Dual Port MDL HDD 48TB (E7W32A) is also available directly through HP.
Another option, I am happy to connect you with an HP Server specialist for any more options on this or any server questions you may have in the future.
