In one sentence: it's a management processor sitting on a server, providing remote management funcionality (e.g. when the server is shut down).

Re: what is iLO?
You can access the console via web, provide "virtual" media like floppy or CD, power on/off the server, view the logs and many more.
Well, there are iLO solutions for PA-RISC, Integrity and Proliant servers. The name is equal, but the functions are "slightly" different.
Just watch your DL580 while booting, go to the ILO config and set up the right IP and user config. Once this is done, you are able to connect using a browser.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: what is iLO?
...HP remote management gives you virtual presence, i.e. complete control as if you were in front of servers in datacenters or remote sites. This means you are always in control regardless of server status or location. ILO delivers unique remote management simplicity and agility that lowers operational costs, improves IT productivity and increases system availability.
iLO is available in two forms, iLO Standard and iLO Advanced. iLO Standard provides basic system board management functions, diagnostics and essential Lights-Out functionality as standard features on iLO supported ProLiant servers. iLO Advanced provides remote administration functionality as a licensed option...
You'll be able to see and manage your server remotely, you can even set up your bios and see POST as if you where in front of the server, but on a remote location ;)
