Win 2012 Srv and USB 3.0 hardware

I've got an exclamation mark in Device Manager at "USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller", device status "This device cannot start (Code 10). An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function".

Problem occurs both on 2012R2 and 2012 (on 2012 controller's name is a bit different but everything else is the same)

Re: Win 2012 Srv and USB 3.0 hardware

You didn't mention what server model this was?

Any other information?  Is this an add-in card with USB 3.0?  I thought Proliants all still used USB 2.0 for built-in ports, but maybe some model out there has it now?

If it's an add-in card, then you're better off checking with the manufacturer of that and get their latest drivers or check their support section.

It's a Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2. It has 2 USB3.0 at the back.

Re: Win 2012 Srv and USB 3.0 hardware

Ah, I didn't realize HP was actually putting USB 3.0 on any Proliants... but I'm using only DL series servers so I'm missing out I guess.

When troubleshooting driver errors, I start out by looking in the event log... drivers start during bootup so just look back in the system log for the last boot time and see what errors it threw when it tried loading that driver.

If there's any useful info in there like it simply couldn't find the driver file or something weird, you can go from there. Otherwise if it's just a generic sort of message, you can try uninstalling the driver and reboot, then try installing it again/detecting the hardware. Maybe half of the time when I've seen a problem like that, simply reinstalling the driver helps.

The other half of the time I have to dig deeper and see what the driver file is (the .sys file), maybe check for updates, and I guess even check that the underlying hardware is actually working correctly.

But really, there's a lot of reasons why a driver might not load so you kind of have to walk through the troubleshooting tree to figure it out.

I don't think the USB drivers are HP specific... it's probably using the regular USB 3.0 drivers from Microsoft, so you could probably even check on the MS support forums or the KB for any ideas.

Solved it. All you need to do is turn on USB3.0 option in BIOS.
