1783 - Slot 7 Drive Array Controller Failure

Hi,
I was called out today to a customers where his Proliant 1500 / 150MHz / 64Mb RAM / Bios dated 1996 will not come back on since a power failure.

The following stays on screen for quite some time:
Smart-2SL Array Controller Initialising..

then you get a message:
1783 - Slot 7 Drive Array Controller Failure

It reports two devices, a tape drive on SCSI ID5 and a CRD-254V CDROM on ID4.

The Smart Array Bios is accessible.

I have had a read on net and it appears this problem could happen if:
a). your controller card is in a hot plug PCI slot or
b). the battery is flat on the controller card

So can anyone tell me:
a). Is slot 7 hot plugable PCI slot and
b). What sort of battery I might need

Alternatively, if you can offer any help at all it will be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Sean

Re: 1783 - Slot 7 Drive Array Controller Failure

Hi Sean:

a) that server dosenot have any pci hotplug slots:

here is the slots available on that server:
Five EISA
Two PCI
One shared EISA/PCI

b) you will need the battery memory cache module, since you cannot buy that by itself from HP ; you will need to buy the whole controller. >

Smart 2SL, PCI to SCSI, 32 Bit Array Controller Option Part Number 242776-B21
Spare Part Number 242777-001

You can also use these controllers instead.
they all have same driver and you should have no problems with o/s or system.

SMART-2/E EISA
SMART-2/P PCI
SMART 2DH PCI
SMART 2SL PCI
SMART Array 221
SMART Array 3200/3250
SMART Array 3100ES

Best regards,

Tarek.
