Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

I have obtained a LH Pro with two Pentium Pro 200 CPUs.

During boot, the system says "Dual Processor system, configured for 1 CPU".
I couldn't find a setting in the ECU to enable the 2nd CPU, and I don't have the Navigator CD-ROM.

What needs to be done to enable the 2nd CPU?

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

Hi Gary,

thanks for your reply, but it didn't help in my case. I have a VRM installed for each CPU, both VRMs look identical, probably my system was a dual CPU configuration from the beginning.

Any other idea?

Jochen

PS: the BIOS is version 4.05.16

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

You may have to change the switches and re-configure. You can find the manuals for the LH Pro at this location:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&locale=en_US&docIndexId=179911&taskId=101&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=50454

or go to http://www.hp.com and select drivers and downloads then search for lh pro. That should take you to the page for drivers and documentation and such.

Hope this helped.

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

Hi Jochen,

make sure you have the VRM installed for the second CPU other wise you might not see the secodary processor initialized

Or the VRM might be bad if you have it installed already. For that matter the one of the Processors might be bad also

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

Problem still exists. This is what I have done so far:

- Removed primary CPU and placed secondary CPU in primary slot (to verify that CPU 2 is good). System starts normallly

- Installed primary CPU in secondary slot (i.e. swapping CPUs from original configuration), system starts normally

- Swapped VRM modules, system starts normally

In all cases a message like "Dual processor ready system, initialized for one CPU" is displayed during boot.

Reading the manuals, I couldn't find any reference for setting a switch or jumper for dual- vs. single CPU configuration.

There may be more information on the Navigator CD-ROM, but I don't have that.

Any other ideas?

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

I have not yet found a solution. Since I have another DUAL Pentium Pro Server (different manufacturer) where you can enable/disable the 2nd in the BIOS, I tried to launch the BIOS setup with F2, but no luck.
So my hope is that I can somehow enable it with the HP Navigator CD-ROM (which I don't have yet)

Re: Enabling 2nd CPU on Netserver LH Pro

Jochen,

If you have the EISA Config Utility (ECU), you should be able to enable the second CPU with it -- you don't need the entire Navigator CD. With the LH Pro, you want to set the Multi-processor specification to MPS 1.1 for NT to see both CPUs.

One thing that's important to note if you're installing NT4 is that if the kernel was built while the hardware was configured for a single CPU, it will need to be reinstalled with the hardware set to the MPS 1.1 spec. The NT4 kernel wasn't able to switch modes. (I heard somewhere that one could hack the registry, but I'm not sure how complete a solution this is, and if it's a new install, it would be a lot easier to just reinstall, anyway.)

Good luck. If that doesn't work, we can go back to head-scratching mode...

Best Regards,
Dave
