HP TC3100 freezing daily, running out of ideas!

Getting random freeze-up issues with our TC3100 on an almost daily basis, allow me to explain the situation. The issue seems to happen more often then not during the nightly backup, about 10% of the freeze-ups have happened outside of this window. Usually it is hanging about 1 hour into a 3 hour-12 hour backup (3 diff/12 full). Generally when it freezes it is able to restart and complete the backup after the system is rebooted.

Symptoms when the server freezes:
No ability to access using VNC (remote access software)
A black screen when the monitor is turned on and no ability to see any sort of display
No hard drive activity lights at all
I *can* ping the server
No access to shared folders via mapped drives or My Network Places
Client workstations hang when loading group policy from this server
Printing from printers shared from this server is unavailable
Cannot access the services, event viewer, etc of machine through another workstation

Here is the hardware config:
HP TC3100
Single PIII 1.26ghz
1 gb RAM
Adaptec 2110s SCSI RAID card
3com 3c996b Copper Gigabit NIC
Hot swap functionality
3 Seagate 36gb 10,000rpm drives
Onstream ADR2.120Si Tape drive

Here is the software config:
Windows 2000 Server (SP3)
Diskeeper 7 server (defrag/disk maintenance)
Arcserve 2000
Network print serving is provided by this machine
Symantec Antivirus Corp 8.0 (acts as primary server for SAV updating)

Troubleshooting procedures we have done so far:
Disabled Diskeeper
Uninstalled Undelete
Update motherboard bios
Replace SCSI cable with factory recommended part number
Remove gigabit NIC and use onboard instead
Machine started with 256 mb of ram, 256 more was added prior to installation of server, during testing all 512 mb was removed and another 512 mb module was installed in a different slot, this did not work so the first set of memory was installed as well giving us 1 gb total.

Any ideas? Any help would be great, please respond if you have any ideas.

Hi,

I think I can give you only one advice

call HP Support.

Why, there could be a hardware error somewhere in the system, firmware the same story. As for arcserv call them too. Last idear check your switches for autoneg and duplex speeds, hard code them in to your backup server and switch port.

Hope it helps a bit and good luck,

Robert-Jan.
