LC3 SDRAM memory
Does anyone know which are the differences between HP memory modules and other ones, like Kingston ?
I want to increase the RAM memory from the actual 128 MB to 384 MB, but I think that HP modules are too expensive, because the LC3 is an obsolete equipment, and it's no worth to expend too much money on it.
Due that, I've tried to install several 256 MB modules from Kingston and the results have been very rare:
1.- Kingston 256 MB SDRAM PC133 no ECC, no registered. The server works, but in the boot, a message appears indicating the possible errors. (I need to extract the original module from HP and let the new module alone)
2.- Kingston 256 MB SDRAM PC100 ECC, no registered.
The same as above.
3.- Kingston 256 MB SDRAM PC133 ECC and registered (like the modules from HP).
The server doesn't works, in any way, with or without the original module.
Depending in the slot position, the server boots or not, but when the SO starts, a blue window appears with the message "hardware malfunction".
Could you please help me with this issue ?
I would like to understand the reason for that. Apparently, the modules from HP and from Kingston are equal.
I'll be very grateful with your answers.
Thanks in advance

Re: LC3 SDRAM memory
Hi Martin
As far as I remeber the LC3 use "Registered 100Mhz ECC SDRAM DIMMs. So if you can get hold of that it should work. The server can only hadel 256MB x4 =1gb and the dimms can be installed one at a time. If this don??t work
let us know the exact error
message.

Re: LC3 SDRAM memory
Thanks for your answer.
Yes, you're right Frank.
In theory, the LC3 admits 64, 128 and 256 MB DIMM SDRAM ECC registered in any slot and quantity with a limit of 1 GB.
The standard bus speed is 100 MHz, but I think there is no problem with PC133 memory modules. Or yes ?
As I said before, I install three different modules and no one works right.
I understand it, if the modules are not ECC or not registered, but I don't understand it, if the module has the same features as the originals from HP. I mean, DIMM 256 SDRAM ECC registered.
The only difference is the speed. I install PC133 instead PC100, but I think this is no problem.
Then, what the memory modules from HP have that the others haven't ?
When the server boots, a message appears, indicating that the server has a non HP module. OK. But, depending on the kind of module, the result is different.
If I install a DIMM 256 SDRAM no ECC no registered, (alone, without any other module, because there is no compatibility. Logic) the system boots well and works fine.
If a install a DIMM 256 SDRAM ECC and no registered, (alone too) the system works as well.
But if I install a DIMM 256 SDRAM ECC and registered, the system doesn??t works. No boot. No memory check. Nothing.
In this case, if I let the original modules from HP (2x64 MB SDRAM) and add the 256 MB SDRAM ECC registered to the 3rd slot, the system check the first two modules only, and boots, but the system is halted when windows starts, and a blue screen appears showing a message of hardware malfunction.
Then, the only thing that can I suppose is happen, is that HP memory modules have a different kind of "registered".
But, what is that difference ?
Thanks again.
Carlos
