LH II w/ netraid loading linux
We've recently recieved a client request to load linux onto an old LH II netserver with a netraid card in it.
Having some difficulty with the linux AMI drivers not recognizing the RAID partition type.
Does anyone have information that would be of assistance in loading linux (tried SuSE 8.2 professional and Debian) on the RAID array?
Our only other alternative would be to dump the netraid and either recommend replacing the controller (from the sound of the client, dubious at best) or using a software RAID (obviously not a first choice.)

Re: LH II w/ netraid loading linux
I have an LH3 with on-board netraid. Redhat 9 recognizes the scsi and netraid controller during the installation. I did however have to create the logical drives before installing and configuring the system. I created the logical drives that I wanted to assign the mount points to before the install process and redhat recognized them as partitions and allowed me to configure with the mount points I wanted on them. I know this is not LH II, but as far as I know the netraid controller is the same principle. I used the netraid utility during post to create the logical drives.

Re: LH II w/ netraid loading linux
They tried a few options, even removing the netraid card (with the option of either software RAID or replacing the card with a more compatable one) and even tried loading onto a bare drive on the onboard SCSI controller.
Depending on which distro tried, a variety of errors ensued which are not even remotely related. WITH the netraid card installed on three different distros (including RH) there's a kernel panic and graphic distortion such as if something is poking into the graphics memory of the onboard controller instead of the RAID card. When removed, that disappears but still end up with a kernel belch when the kernel loads and no further action on install options from there (except SuSE, but still ends up at a dead end).
I'll give it a whack in the next few days, time permitting. I'd give it a weekend "science project" status for the fun of it, but have to go play Army this weekend (at least I haven't been invited to turn that into a full time occupation again, with no option otherwise yet)...
Until then:
Ideas?
Comments?
Dirty jokes?
When I get back, will provide more specifics (if any) to shed more light into the kernel bail. Failing anything soon, I'm going to have to tell the client to junk it and go with an IBM with linux OR a solaris box if they're so set on a *nix varient for their operation.

Re: LH II w/ netraid loading linux
It occured to me that I had an LD Pro with dual P200's with Redhat installed at one time. I had some 'funny' things with the on-board video. One of the resolutions was to install a PCI video adapter and disable the on-board video. That took care of my video problems. I did not have netraid on that box and was using software raid, which worked very well. I don't know about hardware raid on that box because never used it. Hope this helps.
