My compaq server wont load explorer!

Hi! At first my compaq ml350 server just suddenly ceased to read cd's. I decided to run windows update. after it imstalled service pack 4 i restarted the server and i received a message saying that a service or driver had failed to initialise and that i should chack the event viewer. i logged on, but explorer would not appear there are no icons no start bar nothing. i tried to start explorer thru the task manager by chossing new task but when i click new task it automatically closes the task manager?!? I dont know what to do could someone PLEASE help me! Thank you.

oh i forgot to mention that i am running windows 2000 server family.

Sounds like something was corrupted! I'd navigate to "Windows Explore", Click on My Computer then "C" drive, Click on "Programs", Scroll to Internet Explorer, double click on it and look and see if there is an "Explorer Icon" and double click it and see it will open explorer from
there. If explorer will open from there, then right mouse click on the icon and copy it to your desk top. Delete the old icon on your desk top. If the above doesn't work, (if it were my computer) I would format the hard drive and re-install the operating system. (I'd would also save anything important to a "CD" first. Good Luck

Thanks for the help but i might not have made my point clear; once i logon explorer.exe does not kick in, so i cannot navigate as there is no desktop or start bar! just a light blue blank screen with a mouse cursour on top.

Press ctrl-alt-delete, should load teh task manager. Then do new task, explorer.exe.
I've had a few servers do this, but one you have first run up explorer they seem to be OK afterwards. Not sure if its a registry ( hkey_current user) or a profile problem.

I should have read more. You've tried that. Is it on the network? Can you ping it? Or open it with terminal services.

If not, can you F8 it at boot and go into safe mode. Anything then in the event logs to suggest what has died?
