Yikes!
(First: I'm somewhere between a beginner and a novice - at best. That should be obvious when you read my questions.)
I had a used HP Vectra with one 9 gig scsi. It was used as a development server - no real traffic, but used all the time. The hard drive crashed and it was still under warranty so the company just gave me a Proliant 5000 that "should do the trick".
Now. I take the server home and get the following screen (I will include the full text - just so you can have it all):
4558752 KB Detected
COMPAQ System BIOS - E34 (04/19/2000)
Copyrigth 1982,2000 Compaq Computer Corporation. All rights reserved.
Processor initialized at 300 MHz with 512 Kbyte Cache
172-EISA Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid
Initialization Aborted
Slot 4 COMPAQ SMART-2SL Array Controller (rev A, v4.44) 0 Logical Drives
1785-Slot 4 Drive Array Not Configured
Drive positions appear to have been changed.
Run Array Diagnostics Utility (ADU) if previous positions are unknown.
Then turn system power OFF and move drives to their original positions.
Scanning for SCSI Devices... No SCSI Devices Detected
Run System Configuration Utility
Press "F1" key to continue
"F10" key for System Partition Utilities
-----
The "key to continue" option just get an "insert system disk" message. There are three drives in the slots (top-bottom: 9.1gig,2.1gig,4.3gig). The 2.1 has the yellow light (x through harddrive symbol). I don't mind if that means the drive is bad, he through the two smaller ones in for the hassle. He told me the messages were because they'd removed the RAID hardware. I read up on ADU, it said I can't just write it to a floppy and run that way? I don't actually need any RAID Array, I just need to format the drives, install Win2k and get this thing working as a webserver. I'm so sorry about the length of this message, but any suggestions?
P.S. This thread has been moved from ProLiant Servers (ML,DL,SL) to ProLiant Servers - Netservers. - Hp Forum Moderator

SolutionWhat basically you need to do is run system erase by rebooting the Server with a Smart Start CD, if you have one. If not you can always order one by calling 1-800-573-1099 and specfically ask for 5.50B version because anything later then that wont be any good to you. You have another option as well which is by downloading the System Erase from our WebSite. Once you extract on a diskette then you need to COLD boot your server and then follow the onscreen messages. After this you would need to run System configuration Utility which can be downloaded as well. if you dont need to set up raid configuration then you wont need to download Array configuration utility. I am appending a link for you which has all the downloads relating to PL5000:

Re: No SCSI Devices Detected!
Thanks for the reply! I'm running the system erase utility and right when it begins to erase, it gives the following message:
POWER OFF
POWER CYCLE THE SYSTEM NOW
Your system has been intentionally locked up. Power cycling is necessary for all of the system changes to take effect. Please remove the diskette, insert the SmartStart CD, and cycle the system's power.
--------
It seems to have gotten only as far as erasing the RAM configuration and the system time/date. I reboot and there's the Array controller error... is there anything I can do without the SmartStart CD?
Thanks again!

Re: No SCSI Devices Detected!
Just want to let you know that I am at least able to install win2k now. Thank you. I still don't quite understand the array issues, if there are any, but as long as I have a running system, I'm happy.
Thanks again - hopefully you won't hear from me again,
Eric

Re: No SCSI Devices Detected!
I am glad everything worked out alright for you. The message you were getting after running the system erase is normal. What basically you needed to do was to take out the diskette and insert the first diskette from the System configuration utility and that would have taken you right to the OS installation stage. Now regarding the array configuration, there is a downloadable utility as well which is DOS based but you wont be able to set it up without the Smart Start CD. I remember you had mentioned about one of the Hard Drives showing Amber light...Try reseating it if the light does not go away then you need to replace it.
Regards,
