problem windows 2003 server finding all processors

We have a proliant 6500 quad pentium pro 200 mhz box on windows 2003 server enterprise. It only shows one processor instead of four. Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

As far as I know Windows 2003 doesn't support the Pentium Pro in a multi processor configuration, that will be your problem I think, I've seen the same problem on similar systems.

Hi,

Did you install 2003 on the system when it had the 4 processors in it or were the extra three processors added after the OS install?

I know on 2K that if you installed the OS when you have only one processor, it defaulted to a single processor HAL. I would imagine 2003 works the same. The solution is to update to a multiprocessor HAL, if this applies to you.

Re: problem windows 2003 server finding all processors

This is a known issue with certain Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors. Intel and Microsoft are aware of the issue and there is no fix for it. Unfortunately, the only solution is to upgrade the processors.

With the Proliant 6500, I believe you can upgrade to PII Xeon processors, but that is bound to be a very expensive solution. You might be able to use PII CPUs with a different model number (the problem seems to exist just for Models 1 and 3 Stepping).
