Proliant ML110 - which OS works on this server?
Hello there!
I have a new server and I cannot install no OS so far.
I have tried some mandriva derivate
- PCLinuxOS - I can't remember the issue, maybe the SATA driver? Anyhow I was too lazy to look for as this was a desktop distro and I was looking for server distro at the time.
- VirtualCity - the X server does not know the video chip, g200e, altough the boot screen and the boot info is displayed in graphical mode, so no interface is available. I don't know Mandriva very well so I can't install from command line.
- Mandriva 2008 itself - works, but installation stalls at about 25% no matter how long I wait,
- CentOS-5.1 does not find about anything known in this server.
As this specific model is certified by RedHat I subscribed for the REHL eval version, but this takes time to be evaluated and approved as user :), so I'm still waiting.
I even tried Windows 2008 - does not boot at all from the DVD, but this disk works on my PC.
As my spare time increases, I am trying XP Pro right now and it seems to work.
So if anyone installed some operating system on this server or have another idea, please let me know - I do prefer some Linux.
I have the 3040 CPU, 512 MB RAM and 2 160 GB disks. Initially configured RAID 1, I have given up the RAID in the hope Mandriva will work - no difference.
Thank you in advance

Re: Proliant ML110 - which OS works on this server?
Hello,
I am not an expert with LINUX; But for 100 Series servers installing windows can be a pain.
www.nliteos.com can be used to INTEGRATE the SATA drivers with the OS image.
There should be something similar with linux.
:) Regards.

Re: Proliant ML110 - which OS works on this server?
Thank you, I solved this in some other way.
Incredible, but the problem was... the DVD-ROM!
Yes, after wasting all my New Year holiday, I've tried another DVD-RW and all of the above worked, except the Virtual City - see the video driver issue.
Btw, Windows XP Pro SP2 installed with no driver necessary - as the SATA was marked Legacy.
Windows 2008 works perfectly too, this is what I'm using right now (isn't that ironic?) But that was the time that I had and was also a last minute decision as I am curious about the virtualization capabilities. Next on list in this issue is Mandriva or RedHat which finally forwarded me the server eval info.
Thank you for the reply anyway.

Re: Proliant ML110 - which OS works on this server?
Wow That was Crazy, I shud say; As you mentioned you were able to install XP & 2008; One would not guess the DVD drive to be the Issue. Well, All set now, wishing you great time ahead !
