smart array 3200 controller error 1783

I'm installing the Smart Array 3200 Controller in a Proliant 800 6/400 server and receiving the following error upon startup:

1783-Slot 1 Array Controller Failure! Self-test failure (ErrCode=E400.300ch)

Is this controller bad or could there be another explanation for this error?

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

David:

Did you just try to update the ROM on the controller?

Do you have any other Smart Array Controllers in this server?

have you tried to POST this controller in another PCI slot?

If you ca, remove the PCI cache acclorator module and then reseat it.

Any luck?

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

If you did try to update the ROM on the 3200 controller, try the update again, with a NEW diskette:

Here is the ROMPaq you need:

You need Disk Number 1

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

I tried the ROMPaq update you suggested and get the same error.

No other Smart Array Controllers are installed but the original SCSI controller is installed.

I have tried it in another PCI slot with the same result.

Sorry for my ignorance but I don't know what the PCI Cache Accelerator is or how to remove it.

Thanks for your help.

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

The battery backed cache card I refered to image is attached.

It is likely that the controller logics have indeed failed. You will need to replace the card.

ok, i got the cache card off and reseated it with the same result. Should I run any diagnostics?

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

David:

No... I must say that if you still get the "Controller Failed" error then you have a dead card. You will need to replace the card with either another 3200 or another SmartArray Controller.

Here is a document to help you choose the migration path if you wish to purchase a newer controller:

Sorry for your loss.

I've got the same error on ProLiant 3000 with Smart Array 3200 controller (command failure cmd=11h, err=020h), but the card works in another system. I think you should try to do the same.

Re: smart array 3200 controller error 1783

I had a similar error on a 3200 when I tried using it in another 3000, but it would work in the old 3000 configuration. Finnally I was able to get it working on the second 3000 by actually clearing the NV cache. Sounds like that is what they had you do by removing the cache chip and reseating it. But you may look into trying to perform the removal via the software.
