How many voltage regulators does i need for two Xeon PIII 500MHZ/1MB cache Processors in my LH4r?

Re: Voltage Regulators

You'll need a minimum of 3 vrm's for 2 cpu's.
If cpu's are in slots 1 and 2, you'll need vrm's in slots 1, 2 and 1/2.

Re: Voltage Regulators

There must always be a VRM in VRM slots: 1, 2, 1/2 & 3/4. So, you must have a minimum of 4 VRMs at all times.

For 2 CPUs, you just need those 4 VRMs. For 3 CPUs, you'd have to add a 5th VRM in VRM slot 3. And, for 4 CPUs, you'd have to add the 6th VRM to VRM slot 4.

I got this information from the LH3 to LH4 Upgrade Guide, p. 17 (page 21 of the PDF):

Re: Voltage Regulators

Actually, Alicia, you're wrong. If you have processors in only slots 1 and 2, you do not need a vrm in slot 3/4.

Re: Voltage Regulators

Just as I said before. If you have only 2 installed, and they are in slots 1 and 2, then you only NEED vrm's in slots 1, 2, and 1/2.

The reason is: Each xeon processor requires about 1.5 vrms to run. So slots 1 and 2 share a vrm for the other 1/2 that it requires. Slots 3 and 4 share the vrm in slot 3/4. So, unless you have a cpu in either slot 3 or 4, you will not need a vrm in 3/4.

The documentation says what it does because from the factory, the server is shipped with a vrm in slot 3/4. The reason for this is simple. When you order a cpu upgrade kit from hp, it includes 1 cpu and 1 vrm, not 1.5 vrms.

Re: Voltage Regulators

Correction to my previous post, you need a minimum of 3 vrms for 2 cpu's, not 2.

Re: Voltage Regulators

thnx chris :D. i just got one more question. The processors got a only slot?, what i'm trying to say is that if i want to put in slot three another processor it must have to be a slot 3 processor or just the same as the others?

Re: Voltage Regulators

All processors must be identical, in terms of speed and cache size.
If you order a 3rd processor, it's the same as the processor you ordered for the 2nd one. Nothing is different.
