Will P-III CPU work in a Proliant 1600 with P-II ?

I have an old Proliant 1600 server with a Pentium II 350MHz CPU. Will it work with a Pentium III 600MHz CPU?

Re: Will P-III CPU work in a Proliant 1600 with P-II ?

hello,

I tried that trick a long time ago on a similar PL1600, from dual Pent II 350 to dual pent III 450... and it failed.

but according to the Intel Specs, it should have worked.

with the new CPUs, the system powered-up fine , POST was OK (CPU, memory).

yet, at the very end of POST, the Compaq BIOS wrote the following message on screen :

"unsupported CPU found.

System halted."

and the only way out was a power down.

When I put back the old Pent IIs, it worked again, so it stayed that way till we decommissioned that old beast.

The P-III processors I wanted to use have their own fans and there are no fan connectors on the processor/RAM board I can use, since the existing P-II processor has a heat sink only.

It was worth a try.

Thanx anyways!
