Re: Arcserve events not alerting

Have you checked the SNMP settings (destination address, community name,...) in the Arcserve alerter config on every backup server ?
You can use the attached SNMP trap receiver to test it on the IM server.

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

Sen,

I didn't know you could do that with IM7 and Arcserve. Where can I get more info on that? I had a customer ask me about getting alerts from Arcserve and I thought it could not be done. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, that would be perfect to know how to do this. I'm also using arcserver for backup. Thanx, Vlado

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

Sen:

Let's separate the issue into 3 components:

1. Is ArcServe sending an event?
2. Is the event getting to the IM7 server?
3. If the event is received, does IM7 know what to do?

Someone earlier in this thread attached an SNMP trap receiver. You might run that up to see if you can get the raw trap. If you do, you might also try to go into IM7 and select "Accept unregistered traps" so that if IM7 receives one it doesn't know about it won't discard it. Then you'll have to go through and troubleshoot the MIB you loaded into IM7.

And to add, are SNMP Traps getting from the Arcserv server to the CMS. Test by generating an SNMP Trap using the HP Management GUI.

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

Sorry for not replying earlier.
I've been away...
Here are the main steps:
1) install and launch the trap receiver tool on the IM machine or another one. In the first case, you need to stop the IM service FIRST.
2) configure your backup server to send SNMP traps (in ARCserver Alert Manager) to the machine's IP address. Make sure the machine responds to a PING from your backup server.
3) Send a test trap from ARCServe alert Manager. You should see it appear in the SNMP trap receiver tool.
There you know if ARCserve sends it correctly (don't forget to use the correct community names).
4) If IM does not receive the trap, check that you have the correct version of the ARCSErve MIB loaded.
5) Otherwise, as suggested by someone else, make IM accept all traps (even those it cannot interpret)... but it is not always sufficient to get something ;)

Note: IM only support SNMPv1 which sometimes causes problems with recent MIBs (like for McAfee antivirus for instance).

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

i found this in my IM events:

Trap Details
Variable Description Value
Enterprise OID String 1.3.6.1.4.1.46.879
Generic Trap ID 6
Specific Trap ID 3

Mib Information:
The associated MIB File Name for this trap is CPQGEN.MIB and the MIB identifier CPQGEN-MIB

seems like IM cannot recognise the test trap..

what should i do?

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

To install SNMPTRAP.EXE, simply copy it to a folder and launch.
IM seems to receive the traps correctly, just unable to interpret.
Get the ARCSERVE MIB file (ASMIB.MIB ?). It can be found on the CD or on the internet.
Be careful: I see the OID ends with 879 (it used to be 877 when ARCserve was still Cheyenne), so make sure you have the latest depending on your AS version.

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

i have copied the asmib.mib from Arcserve to IM directory. Still getting this problem.

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

What about CA Alert?
In some versions of ARCserve the folder 'Alert' has not the administrative share.

It has to be CHEYALERT$

Then your alerts works fine ;-)

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

Copying is not enough, you need to register the MIB file in IM (SNMP Settings section).

Re: Arcserve events not alerting

- Is the SNMP trap receiver running on the IM machine ?
- If not, try it on IM machine.
- If yes, don't forget to stop it before you try with IM (it looks SNMP port).
- If running on IM machine and trap reciever properly stopped, check in IM that it can accept all traps, including generic (I don't remember where it is at). Obviously IM does not understand those Arcserver traps.
