ASR is feature that's configured to detect if your OS is not responding then will reset the server automatically.

You can set most of your ASR settings through the bios or the management agents. The most common reasons an ASR will happen are either overheating of the server, or a system freeze. If you have a Management Processor installing in the system you can reply the last system recovery to get some more information on why your system had the ASR.

I think an ASR is also triggered if the OS is unhappy with information it's getting back from something. If it believes it may be getting corrupt info. it triggers an ASR which effectively (and rather brutally) clears everything.
You can change its behaviour so it does not restart the OS if you wish.
