MSDE Installation problem

When I try to install MSDE supplied with SP14413 I have a message that aborts the MSDE installation with the failure or MSSqlserver service start. I've also various application errors in the application Log. Do you know if XE 2.1 & MSDE is supported on W2K SP1 ?

W2K Server and Advanced Server SP1 (not Professional) is supported. I've never heard of this particular error before - what application errors are in the eventlog?
