Only public works for the community string

I have about 128 servers being ping-monitored by CIM 7 right now - Weirdest thing - I can only drill down to subsystem information, etc, if I go in and add a public community string to the box, and change it in CIM. If I use anything else at all - it doesn't work?
Any ideas?
