SA Account

SA Account

I have a Proliant DL380 G2 running Windows 2000 Server SP3. I installed MSDE 1.0 from the Compaq Management CD, and then applied SP4 for MSDE. That all worked fine. Then I downloaded Insight Manager 7 SP1 and began installing it. I get all the way to the point where it lists the SQL Database Information: SQL ODBC Database, SQL Server Name, Database Name, SQL User Name, and SQL Password. All fields are greyed out and already filled in except for SQL Server Name and SQL Password. The SQL Server Name field contains the correct server name. For the SQL Password, I left it blank since I am assuming it is referring to the password for the SQL User Name of "sa" and then I click Next and get the following message: "SQL Server Authentication must be enabled on the database server. Please make sure the 'sa' account and password can connect to the database" and then I have to exit install because I can't get past that point. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Re: SA Account

Do you manage the SQL server, or does someone else? If someone else does, make sure that they have SQL authentication enabled, not just Windows Authentication. Then, verify the password of the account that you want to use. The DEFAULT password for "sa" is blank, but most good admins change that as soon as SQL has been installed.

Re: SA Account

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I have checked the SA account password and it is set to SQL Server Authentication nevertheless I cannot complete the installation of CIM 7 SP1. Any more ideas on what could be wrong? Much appreciated if any help could provided. Tks.

Re: SA Account

Passwords and logins are case sensitive. Make sure that you're keeping that in mind when entering them. Also, check the connection to the SQL server from the CIM server. Are you getting any specific error messages, or just what's shown in the original post?

Re: SA Account

Thks for the tip Brent. I have check upper- and lowercase. SQL 7.0 is physically installed on the same server. Still I get the same error message.

Re: SA Account

newer versions of MSDE use Windows authentication instead of SQL. During IM7 installs, change the radio button over to Windows authentication and supply 'administrator' (or whichever account was used to install MSDE) and the password.

Re: SA Account

I'm having the same exact problem as the original poster. I don't see a radio box to change the authentication mode. The CIM installation seems to use SQL Server Authentication by default and requires the sa account. Please help! Thanks.

Re: SA Account

If you can find a copy of "Enterprise Manager" for MS SQL, then you can change the login method to allow the SQL accounts.

It comes with full-blown SQL, but not MSDE unfortunately.

Re: SA Account

Puzzled it out. :/

With the hope of saving some other poor sap their hair and their time:

You are going to have to uninstall the MSDE completely and re-install. It is not in Add/Remove Programs. Use the "Un-install MSDE" icon in Start | Programs | MSDE

Upon re-installation of MSDE you will NOT be offered the opportunity to modify any settings.

Only upon re-installation of the MSDE Service Pack will you be prompted to specify whether it should use SQL Auth or Windows Auth. At the first prompt specify SQL. At the second prompt specify Mixed-Mode. At the third prompt you can (and should) specify a password for the sa account.

Once complete you can then try installing the Insight Manager again.

Note that, at least on my system, the install failed again, due to some service using port 2301. I tracked this down to the Compaq Version Control Agent Service (Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Services) and shut it down.

The Insight Manager was then able to login in to the sa account (don't forget to restart the MSSQLServer service) and finish its installation.

Re: SA Account

or see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q319930

and change the registry key to allow mixed mode authentication, which I think is a bit easier :-)
