If I disable the Surveyor service, can I still get Inventory reports with IM? Or does Surveyor do all the data collection work?
Apparently Surveyor does some bad scanning on SAN disk drives causing them to drop occasionally. Per EMC:
Surveyor Issue
We have encountered many situations where Surveyor causes issues when it surveys the disk drives. These issues vary from complete system crash to loss of connectivity to a disk for a brief period of time.
And...
We have found Surveyor does not cause problems every time it runs. The results of Surveyor running seems to depend on the particular performance profile of the system at that specific instant. Currently this issue is being investigated by EMC, Emulex, and Compaq. In the interim Compaq recommends disabling the Compaq Surveyor service. This is our recommendation to you at this time.

Re: Surveyor and SAN drives
We have struck what appears to be the same problem and EMC are asking us to disable the Surveyor service. However, we can't find how to do this. Any clues? We're running SIM and Survey Utility for Windows v2.56.8.0 from Version Control.

Re: Surveyor and SAN drives
Surveyor is a Service running on each Windows server that it was installed on. It was included in earlier versions of the support pack (pre 7.0 I believe). It was replaced with HP Diagnostics. However, if you install HP Diagnostics on a machine that already had Surveyor, it does not automatically uninstall it (!!!) so you end up with both services running (not a problem, just annoying).
You should see a service called "Surveyor" - either uninstall it using "Add/Remove Programs" or just set the service to disabled.

Re: Surveyor and SAN drives
The BSOD occured weekly at Wednesday 06:00. This is the time the surveyor is scheduled at when installed default. An other indicator for the surveyor was that the log file was corrupted.
The machine is connected to EMC SAN drives.
After gathering insight manger logs there were a few more servers with intermittent BSOD (mostly stop 0x0000007A....) at wednesday 06:00.
maybe this is usefull for some others
