SolutionThis can be caused by a group policy which prevents you to shutdown the machine.
Log in o the server with user with admin rights.
1. Start->Run -> gpedit.msc
2. Computer Configuration->windows setings->security setings->local policies->security options-> Shutdown: Allow system to be shutdown without having to log on -> Set to enabled and try again.
If this don't helps you:
- are you able to turn the server off when noone is logged in through virtual power?

Re: ILO2 script cannot shutdown Windows 2003
You are right. enable this option will let me shutdown properly.
Another question raised is that if the user logged in and lock the computer, the computer cannot be shutdown through this ILO script
Anyway can get around this problem ?

Re: ILO2 script cannot shutdown Windows 2003
yes I saw this problem too.
This is the normal behaviour as if you press the power button physically.
I'm not sure if this is applicable for you :
" Start -> Control Panel-> User Accounts.
Under Pick a task, click Change the way users log on or off.
On the Select logon and logoff options page, select the Use the Welcome screen and the Use Fast User Switching check boxes "
So you will be able to turn the server off, even if there is a locked user.
Tested this while ago - this is the normal behaviour of the power button.

Re: ILO2 script cannot shutdown Windows 2003
I was talking about XP.
As far as I know the Fast User Switching is available in 2003 added to domains.
You can try
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ System
Create a new entry : "HideFastUserSwitching" type REG_DWORD and set it to :
0 "Fast User Switching" is enabled
1 "Fast User Switching" is disabled
This should enable Fast user switching and when the server is locked, you should be able to turn it off, tried this with XP nad physical power button.

Re: ILO2 script cannot shutdown Windows 2003
sorry, made mistake in prev answer.
not sure if the fast user switching is available on 2003, can't find it.
it is for XP normally and only when the PC is NOT joined to a domain...
will research this with the power button and locked server..
