Smart Update Manager sum-10.5.0-13 crashes on RHEL

Hi,

we are using HPE Smart Update Manager to automatically update our fleet of ProLiant servers to the latest firmware.

Yesterday, we've upgraded to version sum-10.5.0-13 and are consistently seeing the following error on all our servers with this version:

# smartupdate upgrade
sum : Smart Update Manager Version 10.5.0
Model: ProLiant DL380 Gen10, ROM: U30, ROM Version: 07/20/2023
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Searching for firmware................................................................................................................................ERROR: '<' not supported between instances of 'CpqPackageMeta' and 'CpqPackageMeta'
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "sum_le.py", line 2670, in run
  File "sum_le.py", line 2653, in _run_command
File "sum_le.py", line 823, in run
  File "sum_le.py", line 677, in _get_install_pkgs
  File "/sum_le-10.5.0/hp/hpm/__init__.py", line 223, in get_packages_dir_dict
TypeError: '<' not supported between instances of 'CpqPackageMeta' and 'CpqPackageMeta'

A previous version (10.3.5-2) did not show this behavior.

Any advice? Is someone using version 10.5.0-13 successfully on Linux/RHEL?

Operating System: RHEL 8.8

Models:
ProLiant DL380 Gen9
ProLiant DL380 Gen10
ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus
ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus
ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus v2

Thanks in advance,
Christian

Re: Smart Update Manager sum-10.5.0-13 crashes on RHEL

We've further tracked this down to the following firmware packages:

firmware-smartarray-1f19a4a64d
firmware-smartarray-2de15b6882

If those are installed, the problem appears.

Based on checking the XML files, they both appear to try to manage the same "product", which other similar packages do not:

grep product= /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-smartarray-*/*.xml

This either seems like a bug in SUM when handling multiple such packages or a bug in firmware packaging (maybe one of the two packages should Obsolete: the other one?).

We've opened a support case via our partner. The case is still waiting on Engineering, so the problem is still unresolved.

We are still in contact with them (they either can't reproduce the issue or haven't tried...). We are currently providing them again with the necesssary information.

As a side point, the last version of sum that seems to work properly on a dl360g9 running rhel8.3 is 10.0.0-16
