Community Strings - SNMP
On the initial setup of Insight Manager 4.0 you must set up community strings for SNMP. This function must also be created for the SNMP traps.
What are community strings and what do I need to do to create one. I have heard of Public and private community stings but I am not sure how to use them. Any help would be appreciated as I am setting up Insight Manager for the first time.
Thanks

Re: Community Strings - SNMP
Depends on your OS. Microsoft NT 4.0 to 2003 if you install SNMP on the server it would be good if you actually remove the Public on the TRAPS tab of SNMP or at least modify it to something else not so "Public" with a unique name that you will use. Make this a unique name that you like and remember and this IS case sensitive also.
Next add your systems to the "DESTINATIONS" fields that you would like to have as a destination addresses. HP/Compaq recommends that you at least enter the local host by entering 127.0.0.1 and any other address that you would like it to be sent to....
Next in the SECURITY Tab, ensure that the box is checked for "Send Authentication Trap" is checked and using the name you decided to use for your "unique community name" "ADD" this to the "Accepted Cummunity Names" field and this should be set to either READ CREATE or better yet READ WRITE
This last step is important if you wish to be able to remotely update your servers etc or shut them down or be able to use HPSIM for data collection later....
We setup or servers with all of the servers that are used for monitoring both via IP and server name (this is a little redundant)
Once this is done to take full effect SNMP will at least have to be restarted and for NT 4.0 MAY require a restart of the server.
When you have this done, and you beging entering servers into HPSIM you can enter the unique snmp name that you created to get full access to the information. Once you have at least one server configured correctly you can have HPSIM roll out your standard snmp configuration to your servers
Hope this helps
