correctly identify virtual machine guests?

what is everyone using to identify virtual machine guests w/o credentials?

I want to use wbem across the board but the install for the hp wbem providers will not install on virtual machines.

Why the Heck are you installing hardware agents in a VM?

I'm not installing them, I want to use wbem for everything, thought (stupidly) I could install the wbem agents so it would allow access to the wmi data.
