Database Config failure on setup HP SIM 5.0 with SP5 - Windows using local SQL server

We installed SQL 2000 locally on the same server that we are trying to Install HP SIM 5.0 with SP5 for Windows.

When Setup.exe is run, inspection screen passes and presented with Database Configuration screen. But we can't seem to go beyond this screen after parameters entered after next button pressed - get error

Error - "Unable to connect to the specified host. Please check the Host, Database and Port values and be sure the target database is running."

We also entered local HOST file data in frustration.

Database Config. screen has selected "Use SQL/MSDE"

Username, password, domain and host is entered
Instance name: Use existing MSSQLSERVER is selected.

We also tried using "Use this One" with IP of box and server name, using "localhost", using open close [ ] with server name or IP and adding different HOST file entries.

Database: master
Port: 1433
JarFile: greyed out :\jtds-1.0.2.jar

Eventually we tried "Use this one" as local database, but get error

Error - â Unable to get information from the specified database serverâ
