Desktop Management Interface (DMI) Simple Instructions

Does anyone know where i can find some simple instructions on how to configure DMI on a Windows server? I suppose i'll need it for other OS's in due time but I need to start with Windows.

I am very familiar with SNMP since I've been working with Insight Manager for 10 yrs but DMI seems to be a more powerfull communication protocol that HP SIM utilizes.

I don't want any tech manuals ... just a step by step set of instructions on what needs to be installed and what protocal settings need to be make for the client to talk to the server and vice versa.

DMI is an inefficient and outdated protocol that has been left behind by the DMTF in favor of WBEM. Microsoft's implementation is called WMI and is the method that HP SIM uses to collect data on non-HP systems and virtual machines.

It is not possible at this time to use HP SIM, particularly with ProLiant servers, without the use of SNMP.

ok then ... perfect! That's what I need to do, i was mistaken as to what protocal to use. I have some VMware servers and Dell servers that i'd like to do more data collection with.

Would you happen to know where i can find some configuration examples for WBEM? Once again i don't want to get to technical (not yet at least), just some instructions on what to install and how to configure it.

Thanks

Re: Desktop Management Interface (DMI) Simple Instructions

Search the Dell website for "Systems Insight Manager." They have published a step-by-step paper on how to manage PowerEdge servers with HP SIM.

HP SIM 4.2 comes with 2 time-limited 30-day licenses for the ProLiant Essentials Virtual Machine Management Pack. I encourage you to check it out to see the administration features it provides (without requiring a license for VMware Virtual Center).

For monitoring VMware ESX physical hosts on ProLiant servers, go to http://www.hp.com/servers/swdrivers and select the appropriate VMware version to get the download for Insight agents.

More information on that as well as configuring HP SIM to monitor VMware guests can be found in the Best Practices guide from http://www.hp.com/servers/activeanswers --> Infrastructure Solutions --> Virtualization --> VMware ESX
