disable SNMP if using WMI/WBEM?

On Windows systems, if we use WMI/WBEM, can we disable the SNMP service or is it still required? Will Insight Control support SNMP v2?

Hi,

If you are using WMI/WBEM to manage your system then SNMP can be disable.

they do the same JOB.

SNMP v2 is supported on insight control software as Insight Management MIB update kit for HP Systems Insight Manager includes SNMP v2 mibs http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=MTX-57c29e897d5a496d8966a38982тМй=en&cc=us&mode=5&

If the only thing you are managing are rack-based ProLiant servers running Windows, then perhaps. However, ProLiant management for VMware ESX is still SNMP-based and if you have BladeSystem the non-server components communicate via SNMP only. Unless you have a compelling reason to do so, it is best not to disable SNMP.

Hi there,

I agree with David.

I told you to use one of the options as you specifically mentioned windows system.

if you have other devices/system/Operating system which work only with SNMP or WBEM then you need both of them.

thanks,
Aftab

Hi Cybercoaster,
As agreeing with the others
On Page 3 document "Integrating HP Insight Management WBEM Providers with HP System Insight Manager" http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01509052/c01509052.pdf
It is clearly mentioned that you can remove SNMP based monitoring.
---
Insight Provider deployment and SNMP agent removal
The Insight Providers are independent of SNMP agents. If you currently depend on SNMP to provide your management infrastructure, you can remove the agents at the same time you install Insight Providers for Windows. Or, because there are no interdependencies, you can remove the SNMP agents later.
---

I have attached this document (the link above) for you as I see why people mostly prefer SNMP is because of the real time Alerting feature but even this feature is available under the WBEM Providers, also you can read how to configure it on page 5 under "WBEM Indications"

Re: disable SNMP if using WMI/WBEM?

Thank you for all the replies and URLs. THis will help. We have a mix of Windows/ESX/HPUX and since WBEM is more secure, the customer wishes to disable SNMP if at all possible.

Re: disable SNMP if using WMI/WBEM?

In addition, I see the URL above, "SNMP v2 is supported on insight control software as Insight Management MIB update kit for HP Systems Insight Manager includes SNMP v2 mibs http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swIte
m=MTX-57c29e897d5a496d8966a38982тМй=en&cc=us&mode=5& "

The download is from Nov 2008, since we are using 6.2 of Insight Control, do we already have the added security of SNMP v2? How do I know what version of SNMP my Windows servers are using (mix of 2003/2008).

Re: disable SNMP if using WMI/WBEM?

If you stop monitoring by SNMP then note that there may be times when you can't see what's going on as is being noted/discussed in this thread:

https://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1449943

Nutshell version: latest SMH/WBEM etc. shows no sub-components in SMH if SNMP is not set as Data Source.
