Flakey Email Notifications

I'm having a problem where not all my Automatic Event handlers are sending notification emails. Some do, like system down and hard drive space threshold, but others do not, like failed drive. All handlers are setup the same way and going to the same email address, so it's not an email problem. I'm running a clean install of SIM 4.1 SP 1 on Windows 2003. This wasn't an issue in CIM 7 for us. I'm seeing the events get registered by SIM, but the notififcation task just isn't firing up. I've even compared the MIBs to the data in the SNMP trap packet being sent to verify that I have choosen the correct event.

Any one have anty ideas?

I too am having similiar experience. CIM 7 seemed to handle this no problem, but SIM 4.1 does not seem to be very predictable about what it will page on.

Re: Flakey Email Notifications

So after some calls to HP, I have the answer. SIM 4.1 is broke! According to the support people, SIM 4.1 doesn't handle all SNMP notifications correctly. The developers are working on a fix and it should be included in the next patch.

Re: Flakey Email Notifications

To correct the last post, HP SIM is not itself broken. There is no part of the program that is causing this. Rather, a change to the disk MIBs in the agents wasn't communicated to the HP SIM team and so there are some events that can be sent that aren't registered.

I'm trying to get some more information and will post as soon as I know more.

The "fix" will be in the form of a MIB update and not involve patching the application.

In the meantime, set your HP SIM to accept unregistered traps. The traps won't be translated, but at least the receipt of an unregistered trap will be an indication of a problem you should investigate.
