Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Since we installed last MS Security Updates on our network, hardware status on our Systems Insight Manager 5.0 with SP5 (Windows) appear critical (red cross) for all systems.
We have no appearance of other problems.
Any ideas?

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Alfredo, the health status is a red circle for all systems, what about the other columns? Do all the protocols appear on the systems page for any of these systems? Can you verify that ports 161,162 are being used by snmp? I haven't seen or heard of this happening.

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Other columns: ManagementProcessorStatus (where applicable) red crossed, SwStatus (where applicable) ok.
All the protocols on the system page for any of these systems are setting as 'global', and in global protocol setting page all protocols are enabled.
Ports 161,162 are being used by snmp.
The only thing that appears strange is that in 'importan events' list last records of type 'system unreachable' are dated 06/14/06, that is the date when we applied MS Security Patches on this system. (Hw status polling task runs regularly every 5 minutes, and we can run it manually whitout errors).
We can see also some other events after 06/14/06, as 'ARCserve critical trap', that are managed via SNMP, so We thin SNMP is ok.
Thanks for your support

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Do you have a network cable run to the iLO card and the iLO actually in use? If not, then you need to go to the Control Panel on every client -> HP Management Agents -> Take the Remote Insight Information and move it to the Inactive side. Restart SNMP.

You can also try clearing the IML on those servers, if you dont need that information.

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

I don't think ILO is the problem.

We have HwStatus red crossed for all systems, not only for thats with ILO cards.

Hi Alfredo,

I too have exactly the same problem which seems to have appeared recently. Have you managed to find a solution yet?

Thanks

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Hi,

You said before that you thought it might be related to a windows patch. Have you tried taking some recent patches off?

thanks

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

In the half of june WSUS automaticaly installed, as released from MS:
KB917736 (RPC authentication)
KB911280 (Routing and remote access)
KB914389 (SMB privileges)
KB917953 (Vulnerability in TCP/IP)
KB917344 (JScript)

I think some of this patches blocked hardware status functionality.

But sorry, I do not intend to remove any of them.

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

I know that one of the patches can affect servers connected via VPN client.. i beleive it's the TCP/IP one. Other than that we have every patch installed, and have not seen this issue on any server. Red X is definately a communication issue. Have you tried just deleting a device and adding it again? Also try basic pings from the SIM box to the Device by hostname. I don't think it has anything to do with SNMP, even if SNMP is broken, SIM should still report the server as OK. Red means can't communicate, at all. NO Ping, no nothing.

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

HP SIM and all other devices marked with red cross are in the same subnet, and can communicate without any problem (ping too, obviously, via hostname or ip address).
We tried to delete and adding devices without success.
(We marked as active in global protocol setting all modes: ping (icmp), wbem, http, snmp, dmi).

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

I'm the same as Alfredo. All machines are contactable via ip and hostname. Very strange. Surely it can't just be me and Alfredo that have the same problem?

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Ehi, I changed in Global Protocol Setting, Default ping setting from 'Use ICMP protocoll...' to 'Use the TCP protocol...'

and since that all red crosses changed to green normal status!

Bah.

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

Nice one. I checked my protocol setting and mine too had change to icmp. I wonder how that happened?
Anyway, at least its fixed now. Many thanks Alfredo!

Re: Hardware Status in HP SIM always critical

We too suffered this exact same problem; all of our systems suddenly had a Hardware Status of Critical (unreachable). We were running SIM 5.0 SP4 at the time, and uninstalled and re-installed up to SP5 without any change in the problem. The eventual resolution was as suggested, change the Protocol Settings to TCP. No idea why, but it worked!!
