HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

I have a running HP SIM 5.0 server that was previously migrated from 4.2. My problem is related to the hardware status in the SIM console being reflected correctly.

I have numerous servers that when looking directly at the agents, the status is normal, but when looking in HP SIM console it shows minor for the hardware status. I have the hw status task setup to run every 5 minutes in a schedule and have also ran it manually through the console on a single machine. The tasks do complete, but still show the server(s) with a minor status in SIM console, but the agent shows normal. Anyone that has any information about this would be appreciated.

Are these clusters? After upgrading to SIM5 all my Netware clusters show an error even though both nodes show "green".

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Thanks for the reply Nelson. These boxes are all Microsoft OS and are showing incorrect hardware status in the SIM console. Management agents show "normal" hardware status, SIM shows different status.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Thanks for the points - I am now an IRTC Pro!!!

As a "last resort" you could try to hack the database to clear the incorrect status, and then see if it goes back to "minor" during the next hardware status check. Please use at your own risk and obviously HP will frown opon this.

Try this on 1 test server device first (use at your own risk):

1) Find you test server in the "devices" table in SQL and note the "Overall" status column problably shows something other than "1". Change this to a "1" (meaning OK or Green).

2) Using the "devices" table find the "devicekey" number for your test server and note this number.

3) Using the devicekey from step 2, find your device in the "devicestatusvalue" table. Since this is a 1-many relationsip, you will see several rows for your devicekey. Look for the row where the column value for "statussourceid" is equal to "0" (which means "Overall Status") and change the "statusvalue" for that row to be "1".

Thus, you are basically changing the status value for a device in two locations: the devices table and the devicestatusvalue table. I am not sure if this is absolutely needed but I think so.

Again - use at your own risk on try on just one server first. See if the "minor" flag comes back. My guess is that when you did the upgrade, the status got stuck and is not changing back. You could also try deleting the device and re-adding it.

I did this for my Netware clusters, and they eventually went back to minor/major status (thus the cluster agent definitely things something is wrong with the clusters themselves).

Good luck.

Did I mention to use at your own risk?

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Actually, you might not want to try this.

I just tested myself on a known bad server, and everything worked in terms of the status changing to green. However, I then did a manual hardware status check, and now I cant get it to go back to a minor status. I know I did this for the clusters and they eventually went back to original status, so maybe there is some other check that needs to be run and I am just not waiting long enough. But I got sick of waiting so I just deleted the server object and re-added it to get it to show the correct status again.

So to be safe, maybe you should just avoid my suggestion.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

I had same problem, contacted HP. Apparently this is a bug with HP SIM 5.0. You need to go into View All Scheduled Tasks and edit the Hardware Status Polling for Servers, but you don't need to actually edit anything just click next and go through all the steps until you are done. That's it.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Thanks for the info Nelson and Andrew. Editing the task to nothing did not change the result and I did not feel comfortable going backdoor to change the hw status in sql. I am not sure what is causing this, but I would hope this bug/problem gets some attention from HP and a hotfix or remedy is created. Is anyone else experiencing this issue in HP SIM 5.0? Help

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Try going in to the HP Management Agents control panel applet, click the SNMP tab, and then do a "Clear all thresholds" and then stop/start snmp and the agents, then do a SW polling in SIM. This process resolved two different customers I had with the same issue.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Thanks Trent. This did get my software status to recognize correctly, but my hardware status is still showing minor in HPSIM, but normal in the agents themselves. I ran a manual hardware polling task on this device as well with the same result. Anyone else with this problem please help.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Same problem here. Of all the 70 servers we monitor there is only one that has this problem. We have tried:

1) Reinstalling agents
2) HPSIM (even on another machine)
3) All the tips sugested here

But the one server keeps coming back with hardware status minor.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

I just started seeing the issue at my site (running HPSIM 5.0 monitoring 455 devices). Updated several systems this weekend to PSP 7.4 this weekend. 5 DL380 G1 servers show up as having a minor issue but home page shows no issues. Tried suggestions listed (except for the manual database edit). Machines will show up as green until the next hardware polling cycle, and then go back to a yellow state.

Re: HP SIM 5.0 not reporting hardware status correctly

Has anyone come up with a definitive answer for this issue?
I've tried everything listed across multiple threads (including sp4) with no luck. I can get the servers to go 'green' using a combo of control panel applet & deleting from SIM, then 're-discovering'; however, the 'fix' only lasts until the next polling interval. This is driving me nuts!
