HP SIM 6.0 Discovering Servers with iLO

I'm having a problem with the new HP SIM 6.0 we installed. We upgraded from earlier version 5. I'm noticing something strange when discovering new servers with iLO boards.

For example, my ProLiant DL370 G6 server's IP address is 172.17.0.50 and the iLO address is 172.17.0.51. I start a new Discovery, and specify the range of 172.17.0.50-172.17.0.51. What happens is that I get three new entries on my list of All Systems.
1 - System name 172.21.200.50, "unknown" System Type, green check under HS column.

2 - System name 172.21.200.51 in Server (serial number), "Management Processor" System Type, green check under HS column.

3 - System name (serial number), "Unmanaged" system type, Disabled icon under HS column, green check under MP column, No System Address.

Why do I get three new entries? The iLO board seems to be detected correctly and is associated with the Server named by its serial number, but that server has no IP address associated with it. If I run a Discovery on just the IP address of the iLO, I get two new entries, one for the iLO and one for the server, again with no IP address and I can't figure out how to add it.

What am I missing here?

Re: HP SIM 6.0 Discovering Servers with iLO

Ensure both server and ILO are in the discovery range.
Try deleting and then re-adding the server and ILO at the same time.

HPSIM can discover the server via the ILO. It's best to try and get it to discover it independently it should then make the association with the ILO.
As before nsure SNMP is correctly configured to allow the new server access.

Re: HP SIM 6.0 Discovering Servers with iLO

Rob, thanks for the reply. The iLO and the server's NIC are both included in the discovery range, and I end up with three new entries in my list.

I've tried running discovery on just the server NIC's IP, and it detects that there is something "unknown", no management processor, and no other information besides the IP address.

If I run discovery on just the iLO, it discovers the iLO and the server, associates the MP with the server, identifies the server's serial #, etc., but does not associate an IP address with it.

What does your discovery task output?

It seems like you don't have functioning Management Agents on the server you're trying to discover, or that your SNMP setup is incorrect.

Also, make sure that the following is unchecked if you want to strictly manage your discovery content:

Options > Discovery > Configure General Settings >
"Automatically discover a server when its Integrated Lights Out management processor is identified"
"Discover systems in an enclosure when Onboard Administrator is discovered"

Not sure but i just happened to be reading the section of the sim user guide about license manager.... here is a blurb

"You can view and associate licenses to specified target systems discovered by Systems Insight Manager. A
product may use artificial systems to contain licenses. Therefore, you may see names of non-existent systems."

Re: HP SIM 6.0 Discovering Servers with iLO

delete both the ilo and server node. Just discover the server IP. The server node gets created with proper serial number and IP assigned to it. The serial number of this server node should match the server node created during iLO discovery. First make sure the server node gets created with proper serial number, UUID and IP. then discover ILO IP. Check the SNMP agents on the server. If WBEM is there, give credentials and discover server IP. When you discover server, watch the discovery task result. it will give you the right message.
