HPSIM 7.2.3 SNMP problems
I am running SIM 7.2.3 and am having the following problems:
1) I cannot get SIM to recognize a few of my servers. I have double and triple checked all the SNMP settings and have installed the latest 7.0 agents. SIM will not discover them.
2) I also have desktops that are showing up, but the device name is other and the product name is 'Unknown SNMP device'. I have double and triple checked all the SNMP settings and have installed the latest 5.01B agents.
What am I missing?

Re: HPSIM 7.2.3 SNMP problems
[Please note there is a separate IM7 forum at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/categoryhome.do?categoryId=266. The correct name is IM7 and there is no 'Systems' in from of Insight Manager 7. hpSIM is its replacement.]
With discovery filters off IM7 will add any device it is able to ping even if it is unable to determine any management protocols that are running on the box. In this case it will be added as 'unmanageable.' You need to fix this before worrying about configuring SNMP.
The Insight management agents for clients have gone end of life as of December 2003 and are no longer being updated. The preferred management solution for them is HP Client Manager. Already announced and soon to be available is the HP Systems Insight Manager connector for HP Client Manager so they can be used together.
However, if you still are using systems that the Insight agent was supported on, you have to install the web agent and the SNMP part of the agent by doing a custom install and selecting those options.
