iLo Problem- Baffling

I get email alerts which state:

SNMP Trap 9006:
A 'Remote Insight Board Interface Error' trap signifies that the Compaq Remote Insight Board has detected a controller interface error.

Looking at the iLo logs and HP SIM Logs there is nothing wrong?

Anybody have an idea or is this a case of HP SIM Crying Wolf?

Re: iLo Problem- Baffling

HPSIM would have had to receive the trap, so it shouldn't be that.
Is this just from the one Server?

I'd say it would indicate some kind of problem, it may be a sign of something about to fail.

Re: iLo Problem- Baffling

SIM wouldn't be crying wolf here, if anything the server itself would be. SIM was just the receipiant of the SNMP trap. I've seen this in my environment as well, and it has never amounted to anything tangible. (I didn't see anything in the iLO logs either, though I did find corresponding entries in the Windows Event Log of the "offending" server, they were basically the same info that was in the traps.)

It appears to be saying there was a problem with the System Management Drivers or Server Agents trying to communicate with the iLO/RILOE firmware. In my case, by the time we see the 'error', the iLO is always functioning just fine.

Re: iLo Problem- Baffling

Hi!

-> This issue may happen if the Management agents are updated on the server whereas the Firmware on the ILO is of an older version..
-> There may be compatibility issues while the Management agents are requesting information from the ILO, the firmware is unable to understand & hence does not responds... as a result a SNMP Trap is triggered in the HP SIM & windows system event logs as "Controller Interface error" or "Firmware in not responding"

-> In order to resolve this issue the ILO firmware should be of latest version so that it's compatible with latest management agent or in case the Firmware is at the latest version then nothing much can be done regarding the issue as of now & hopefully a fix will be released with the later versions of the firmware.

-> In case we need to get rid of these traps the we may have to disable the agent mentioned in the event - in this case that would be the Remote Insight Agent

Download the latest version of the ILO firmware from http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24584.html, alternately you can also download the latest version of Firmware Maintenance CD from http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24777.html & update the firmware of all the components on the server.

Re: iLo Problem- Baffling

Was there ever any resolve to this issue? I am seeing the same issue but with DL380's with RILO cards (not the integrated ILO ones). Events are logged in the System Log, SIM gets notified and sends an alert, but the RILO is up and fine. I have seen conflicting reports of updating Firmware vs updating agents. Any ideas?
