Install SIM on labtop

Hi
I want to install a test environment on my Compaq nw8240 labtop.
I have read that it's only poosible to install it on Proliant hardware?
Is it possible to install SIM 4.2 on my labtop?
I run MS virtual PC on my labtop, it it possible to run SIM on a virtual PC on my labtop.

Regards Mikael

Re: Install SIM on labtop

A long time ago, Insight Manager XE (our first web-based product) used the ProLiant Systems Management Controller Driver to perform some activities. This required installation on a ProLiant since the driver required the Advanced Systems Management Controller, a hardware piece only for ProLiant servers.

Since that time, no version of Insight Manager 7 and Systems Insight Manager had that requirement.

HP SIM is very resource intensive. Installing it in a virtual machine on a laptop could be interesting for educational or demo purposes but isn't appropriate for actual usage.

For demo puposes, I have HP SIM working on a laptop with a Virtual PC instance to host it. Since the Linux version of HP SIM is slightly less resource intensive, I created a RHEL3 virtual machine to host it. My virtual machine has 768MB of memory and a pre-allocated hard drive file (as opposed to dynamically expanding which is lower performance).

Regardless of whether you decide to host on Windows or Linux, give it as much memory as you can and only install HP SIM itself, not the Version Control Repository Manager, Virtual Machine Management Pack, Vulnerability and Patch Management Pack or Performance Management Pack.
