Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

Attempting to install Insight Agents on a Hp DL140 running 2003.
On extracting and Installing packages, am returned error message that "System Management Controller Driver" software need installing.
On downloading said software and attempting to install "System Management Controller Driver" on the DL140 I am returned by the install program "The software does not need to be installed on this system."

So how do I get to install the Insight Agent on a Dl140 server running 2003 server.

Re: Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

One of the things that differentiates the 300 and above series from the 100 series is that the higher-level models contain the "Advanced Systems Management Controller" which is what the Insight agents connect to for its data. Therefore, there is no purpose for Insight agents on the 100 series.

In order to provide for management of a DL140 with HP SIM, load the SNMP layer from Windows (don't forget to change the settings to provide a community string and that it will respond to packets from other than 'localhost') so that HP SIM can get basic up/down status. Additionally, make sure you have the WMI Mapper installed and configured and provide HP SIM with WBEM credentials under Options --> Global Protocol Settings so configuration data can be collected.

Re: Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

SNMP is up and running and I can from Insight Manager see when the server is up or down, hence community string set up. When you talk about WMI Mapper do you mean WMI SNMP Provider ot WMI Windows Installer Provide ? If neither of these how do I add the WMI Mapper in 2003 server.

Appreciate your help

Re: Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

No, the WMI Mapper is a component that is delivered with HP SIM. If you did a 'typical' install, it was installed automatically. You can confirm that by looking for "Pegasus WMI Mapper" in the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. Make sure that HP SIM knows the location of it and has an entry under Options --> Protocol Settings --> WMI Mapper.

One hint: although not allowed under IANA rules, the use of an underscore character in hostnames is common in many environments. If you have any systems with hostnames such as SIM_HOST, the WMI Mapper cannot connect to them and won't discover WBEM/WMI services there.

Re: Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

David,
May be a simple or not stupid question but when talk about HP SIM what exactly is that. I have looking at the server and the HPDl140 Startup and utilities CD that cam with the server for an app to load but not sure what I am looking for. It i sobvious I dont have this loaded.
So where do I get this from ?

Once loaded I assume this is the solution to be ing able to allow insight manager to drill down to component level of server .

"SNMP is up and running and I can from Insight Manager see when the server is up or down" <-- which Insight Manager version are you using?

The version of Insight Manager is 7 SP2.1.....

Insight Manager 7 will only be able to get up/down status using SNMP. IM7's replacement, HP Systems Insight Manager, adds the WMI functionality mentioned above. HP SIM 4.1 has a data migration utility for IM7 users.

Re: Installing Insight Agent on a DL140 with 2003 Server

Is this just a DL140 thing, cos I aready have it connected to other HP hardware and can drill down to component level.
So I guess you are saying its a DL140 restriction ?
Is there a list of functionality against hardware.
How difficult is the migration to this new version. Is it still a free add on to manage HP hardware ?

This is a characteristic of all of the ProLiant 100 series: DL140, DL145, and ML110.

"Is there a list of functionality against hardware."

Not that I know about. I'll mention it to the product manager.

"How difficult is the migration to this new version. Is it still a free add on to manage HP hardware ?"

Others in this forum could probably give you an un-biased opinion as to how difficult the migration is. You might want to read the "Migrating IM7 to HP SIM" whitepaper to see just what you're getting in to: http://www.hp.com/servers/manage --> HP SIM --> Information Library

HP SIM is a direct replacement for IM7 which is now end of life. It is available for free download or is found in the box with new ProLiant 300 and above servers in the Foundation Pack on the management CD.
