Lose network connectivity when nic updated on windows server

There have been times when installing a PSP from a remote location caused the nic to lose the IP address. Since we don't use DHCP, all Network connectivity is lost until I delete the nic in device manager, reboot, then reconfigure IP.
Does anyone know what are the "rules" to follow so that I do not lose the IP when deploying the PSP? Has anyone had this problem when deploying from HP SIM console(ver 4.2 SP2)? Thanks much, in advance!

Re: Lose network connectivity when nic updated on windows server

Hi Carolyn!

Upgrading will not resolve this issue. We are running the latest version and this happens with us sometimes. We use DHCP so it is not as bad though. I believe it has something to do with the way the NIC driver updates. I think I remember seeing in the forum at one point, that the current NIC driver is uninstalled before the new one is installed. Therefore there is lost connectivity. Do you have iLO's? Sometimes if you use iLO to access the server desktop, you may be able to avoid this problem.

Thanks for your reply.
No, we don't have iLO going at this site. Would be nice!
Most times, I can update the nic remotely and have no major problem, even though network connectivity is lost for a few seconds. But I'm always afraid to do it because there's a small chance it'll fail.
Maybe DHCP is the answer. We do use DHCP for PC's, but not servers (yet!).

Re: Lose network connectivity when nic updated on windows server

Not quite the same problem, but there was an issue several PSPs ago where the NIC driver update left the NIC in an unusable state, and the "fix" was to delete and recreate the NIC. But I've not seen anything like that in the more recent NIC updates.
I think it always drops the connection, but the PSP install from SIM downloads all files before installing and it just requires a relogon to pick up the log to watch the status. It doesn't stop the PSP update itself though.

There are no rules that I'm aware of, the process is designed for the one item updates all in the PSP. The issue above was a bug and, I think, acknowledged as such.
If there's a new PSP released, just watch this forum for a bit, nasty surprises are picked up pretty quickly and reported.

Re: Lose network connectivity when nic updated on windows server

This actually happened today on a DL360 G3. Installing PSP 7.91, including NIC driver, from a network share (wasn't thinking straight).
Install probably failed, as all network connectivity was lost. NIC #1 still worked, but only NIC #2 is connected.
Doing a reinstall of the driver (via iLO) did not work either. Removing the failing NIC and rebooting did work.

Thanks for your replies, that's exactly what I wanted to know.
